Reflection Prompt: Reflect on how you perceive yourself as an online learner? Are you well-prepare to be an online leaner? Tell us about what you need to improve in order to be a successful online learner.
Description:Online Learning is the way to go for the adult learner. Adults who work and raise families, have little to no time to drive to class and sit in a classroom for a 1-1 1/2hrs of instruction. Online instruction, when nurtured and supported by an instructor who is organized and good with communication, provides more opportunities for learning that address all types of learners. Online instruction affords an individual the opportunity to learn at his/her own pace. The learner assumes responsibility for what is learned and how much is learned. The Online Instructor provides materials for learning and platform for discussion. Learning materials may be linked to the websites, blogs, videos, all sorts of articles via the internet. Information that is accessible at anytime and anywhere. Discussion Boards are set up for learner interaction with instructor and colleagues.
Impact:In order to be a successful online learner, you must be self-disciplined, organized, able to make decisions, and responsible. Because there is no instructor hunched over your shoulders, you have to know the requirements for the course, schedule study and activities in your own time frame, and be responsible to accomplish your working goals. Learners should not be afraid to ask for help when having a problem. Not asking will cause setbacks of time and effort. Due to lack of physical/body language afforded in a classroom, learners must be able to vocalize any problems he/she is having. The beauty of the internet is that it is instantaneous. Questions and concerns may be addressed by learners and instructors at any time (even Sundays! at midnight!). Learners receive more individualized instruction and attention which, because of time constraints, aren't common in the traditional classroom setting. The online learning environment fosters anonymity amongst colleagues, and forces learners to develop mutual respect and rapport, when exchanging ideas and when engaging in discussions.
Intent:I feel I have been more successful as an online learner than I have been in the traditional classroom. Most times I have questions outside of the traditional classroom, now my needs are meet, without waiting for the class meeting. My biggest challenge as an online learner, was the in the first 3 weeks of my courses. I had to get accustom to so much new technology that I never even heard of before. I eventually caught on to SpringBoard, Wiki, Elluminate Live!, and I have loved all the technology tools used for my online learning experience.
